"It gives us an actual set time when
we actually sit down and discuss
these issues...Help him show us the
avenues that he would like to open
for himself. It empowers him that
way."    Parent
The portfolio may be used by teachers to promote an asset-focused approach to empowerment of children. The Portfolio focuses on a child's strengths in the context of culture to promote early literacy, communication, and community involvement.
The Take a Look at Me Portfolio can assist adults and school age
individuals in identifying ways to become active participants in the
daily life of their community.

Teachers may use the Portfolio as a tool to engage students in
developing a positive awareness and understanding about individual
and peer strengths, interests, hopes and dreams.

Through the Take a Look at Me Portfolio process students have the
opportunity to generate their own ideas, identify preferences, and
consider choices for the future.  The "asset-focused" portfolio
provides students with the opportunity to consider who they are in
relation to their family, community and culture.  The portfolio also
promotes literacy and communication skills by prompting the individual
to communicate about him/herself through several different mediums.

The Portfolio has also been identified as a powerful tool for use in
transitional periods in a person's life...from one school to
another...from school to work...or from classroom to classroom. It
allows new people in the individual's life to become familiar with likes,
interests, strengths and dreams from the beginning. In this way,
personal and powerful connections may be drawn out and
emphasized from the beginning.
